What is Hypnotherapy?
I like to describe hypnosis as a feeling of deep relaxation whereby you experience a heightened sense of awareness. Your mind and body become totally relaxed during the process and this is the state in which the hypnotherapist can communicate directly to your unconscious (subconscious) mind. You always remain in total control of yourself and can hear everything that is going on around you but with your main attention focusing on the voice and suggestions of the hypnotherapist. It is also in this state that all learning and lasting change takes place which is why hypnosis is such a powerful therapy.
What is NLP? (Neuro Linguistic Programming)
If we look at the words of NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming, we see mind, language, and pattern. We have patterns for everything we do - how we learn, fall asleep, get motivated, procrastinate, fall in love, eat, exercise, keep a job, get frustrated, be happy, basically everything. NLP is a tool to understand how the language of our mind creates and runs the patterns we have in life. Once we are able to have this understanding, we can apply a variety of NLP processes to enhance, change or alter our patterns of thought, behaviour and emotion. You know how most things you buy come with a manual of how to operate them, well one of the descriptions of NLP that I like is it’s like having the owner’s manual for your mind. We were never given such a manual when we were born so I am very grateful that I studied NLP and was able to apply it to my own life.
Is it safe?
Yes, absolutely as there are no substantiated cases of harm befalling any hypnotised subject. The British Medical Association has endorsed use of hypnotherapy since the early 1950’s.
How will I feel?
You will be fully aware of everything that is happening around you during your session and in full control of yourself. It should feel like a deeply relaxing experience and could be likened to a dreamlike state, all you have to do is keep an open mind and follow the guidance of your therapist.
How does it work?
Once a client is has become suitably relaxed by guidance of the therapist, the critical faculty (the part that separates conscious & unconscious minds) disappears and the two minds become one, working together towards the common outcome or goal. This is the state in which all learning and change takes place and why hypnotherapy is so powerful in change work.
How long will it take?
A typical Hypnotherapy session lasts about 90 minutes & includes an explanation of hypnosis & how it works, an interview about the goal to be achieved and a few suggestibility tests followed by the hypnosis session itself. More complex challenges can sometimes be better addressed with NLP and Timeline Therapy and this can require more time and details can be discussed in a FREE consultation with Paresh.
